October 2024

October, it’s the season of colorful foliage, pumpkin spice lattes, cooler weather, football and the anticipation of Halloween. We get a front row seat to fall’s kaleidoscope of reds, oranges and yellows. October is derived from “Octo,” the Latin word for eight.

Libra and Scorpio rule. Opal and Tourmaline are the birthstones: opal symbolizes faithfulness and confidence, while tourmaline is renowned for its vast spectrum of colors and its ability to inspire artistic expression. Calendula, also known as marigold, is the birth flower, and with its bright orange and yellow colors perfectly echoes the changing autumn foliage.

The festival of Oktoberfest celebrated worldwide actually begins in September and concludes the first week of October in Munich, Germany.

Pizza lovers, rejoice!! It’s National Pizza Month.

Get a slice or whole pie.

October is also a month for advocacy. Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, National Bullying Awareness, and ADHD Awareness Month all occur during October.

One of the most notorious fires in American history, The Great Chicago Fire, began on October 8, 1871.

The First Jack-o”-Lanterns were not pumpkins. The tradition of carving Jack-O’-Lanterns originated in Ireland and they were made from turnips!

It’s World Series month! Go Yankees!!

As you unravel these October fun facts, grab your favorite hot beverage, cozy up with a book and watch as October unfolds its unique tapestry of events and celebrations!

Dear Friends in Christ:

I so enjoyed watching the Summer Olympic Games. There were crowds, enthusiasm, the Olympic flame, medals, pride, cheering and national anthems.

What events did you watch? What was your favorite win? What got your adrenaline pumping? What moment stuck with you long after turning off the TV?

No matter what our varying sports preferences or opinions, you must agree there was a lot of teamwork, whether it was a team sport or an individual athlete supported by a team of trainers, coaches, nutritionists, physical therapists and family.

Think of the dedication, sometimes for decades, to prepare for the ultimate competition. They worked so hard together, and sacrificed so much, with eyes on their mutual goals.

It has been much the same at Epiphany. Laypeople pitching in, helping each other, staying positive, assuming additional roles, and doing whatever needs to be done and saying “yes” when asked.

At Team Epiphany, your ongoing, faithful participation is as important as ever. I ask you to continue investing in Epiphany’s future with your financial support and your precious gifts of time. Your contributions will continue to keep Epiphany’s flame alive.

Blessings,
